Shards.

All my work is packed for the move. Except for the pieces I sharded. You know what they say, you can’t take it all with you.

This is it. Thirty-three boxes and crates. Don’t be fooled by the shoeboxes, they are basically full of rocks. Some of the crates hold only a couple of sculptures.

This is not it. A five gallon bucket, and about half of a ten gallon wastebasket.

I liked these cups, but this one was really warped. Hammer time.

A cool tri-pod vase that developed some major cracks on its second trip in the soda kiln. I really liked it and kept it for about four years, but it was time to let that one go.

The one time I played with majolica glazes.

Those buckets of shards look familiar! It’s a good feeling, I suppose, to lighten one’s load.

It’s quite a relief! I end up torn about breaking things, sometimes. I hate to waste the embodied energy, but… yeah. With that pile of boxes towering in the living room, I’m tempted to just shard a couple of them. They’re fine pieces and I would like them to go out in the world… but it’s a whole lotta pots to move.

My pottery collection (pots in the kitchen, that is) is now packed. It’s another seven milk crates and five clay boxes. Whew.

Seems too drastic. Certainly understand the maker / destroyer dichotomy of creation similar is seen in the Tibetan sand mandala- a beautiful expression if however temporary. My I suggest an alternative however. A proper burial of the unbroken unneeded ceramic articles. Grab a shovel find a suitable location and return the items back from which they had been sourced. It will give the archeologist a thousand years from now something to ponder.

I hadn’t thought of it in terms of the Krishna/Shiva dichotomy. Your comment brings me back to my experience – as opposed to the objective data of weight and volume.

I’ve written enough to merit a blog post… (start we now yet another draft!)
